PSHE

Intent

At our school, we deliver a high-quality PSHE curriculum through the Jigsaw programme, which is designed to support the holistic development of every child. Our intent is to ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members, and members of society.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Promote emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Develop resilience, self-esteem, and confidence
  • Equip pupils with the tools to make informed decisions about their health, relationships, and future
  • Foster respect for others, tolerance, and inclusivity
  • Prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life

The curriculum is structured around six progressive themes that are revisited each year to deepen understanding:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

These themes are fully aligned with the statutory Relationships and Health Education (RHE) requirements and are underpinned by the promotion of British Values, safeguarding, and spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development.

We have embedded two key threads throughout our PSHE curriculum:

  • Mindfulness and emotional regulation
  • Respectful relationships and personal responsibility

This ensures that pupils are not only acquiring knowledge but also developing the emotional literacy and social awareness needed to apply it meaningfully.

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly in all year groups using the Jigsaw scheme, which provides a consistent, spiral curriculum that builds on prior learning. Each lesson includes:

  • A calm, mindful start to support emotional regulation
  • A clear learning intention linked to personal development
  • Interactive, inclusive activities that promote discussion, empathy, and reflection
  • Opportunities for pupils to apply learning to real-life contexts

Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND, and are delivered in a safe, supportive environment where pupils feel confident to express themselves.

PSHE is also embedded across the wider curriculum and school life through:

  • Whole-school assemblies and themed weeks
  • Cross-curricular links (e.g. Science, PE, Computing)
  • Pupil voice opportunities (e.g. School Council, Eco Committee)
  • Engagement with external agencies and local services
  • Responsive teaching that addresses current issues or pupil needs

Teachers use formative assessment strategies such as observation, discussion, and pupil self-assessment to monitor progress. Learning is recorded in class floor books or individual journals, providing evidence of progression and reflection.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident in the personal development, behaviour, and attitudes of our pupils. They demonstrate:

  • A strong sense of self-worth and identity
  • The ability to manage emotions and relationships effectively
  • An understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, both physically and mentally
  • Respect for others and a commitment to equality and inclusion
  • The confidence to speak out, make informed choices, and seek help when needed
  • We evaluate impact through:
  • Pupil voice – children articulate their learning and its relevance
  • Teacher assessment – ongoing observations and reflections
  • Behaviour and safeguarding records – evidence of positive choices and wellbeing
  • Monitoring of floor books/journals – showing progression in knowledge and personal insight

By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education. They leave us as emotionally literate, socially responsible, and resilient individuals, ready to contribute positively to their communities and navigate the challenges of modern life.
