Bethany C of E Junior School: Our D.T. Curriculum Intent

At Bethany C of E Junior School, our Design & Technology curriculum encourages every child to become a creative, thoughtful and confident designer. Rooted in our Christian values of Hope, Compassion and Courage, pupils learn to imagine possibilities, consider the needs of others and approach challenges with resilience.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum (2014) and is carefully sequenced so that skills and knowledge build year on year. All pupils experience hands‑on learning across four key areas:

    • Sewing and Textiles

    • Food and Nutrition

    • Structures and Mechanisms

Each year group revisits these areas, developing increasing independence, accuracy and creativity. Children follow the full design process—researching, designing, making and evaluating—so they understand how ideas become purposeful products.

We also make meaningful links across the wider curriculum, helping pupils connect their D.T. learning to other subjects giving their learning a meaningful context. This strengthens understanding and shows how design shapes the world around us.
