Bethany C of E Junior School: Our Maths Curriculum Intent

Mathematics is a universal language that helps us to understand the world, and it is a core part of the curriculum. As well as teaching about numbers, shapes, statistics and patterns, it provides important tools for work (Ofsted, 2023). At Bethany C of E Junior School, we believe it is vital that we equip pupils with the skills they need to be successful in life ahead. This is weaved through our Mathematics curriculum alongside our school values.

At Bethany C of E Junior school, we aim to inspire all pupils and enable them to foster a love for Mathematics, through purposeful and engaging activities that promote curiosity and resilience. We cultivate a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling pupils to apply their knowledge confidently in real-world contexts.

We follow the Small Steps White Rose curriculum to ensure broad coverage of objectives. Teachers carefully plan a sequence of lessons that enable pupils to build upon their prior knowledge before progressing within the curriculum. Pupils develop automatic recall of foundational number facts which provides a foundation for deeper knowledge and understanding. We encourage pupils to reason mathematically and solve problems orally, numerically or through jottings.

All teachers create a supportive learning environment where every pupil feels valued and empowered to take risks in their learning journey. Thoughtful adaptations and worked examples are accessible so that all pupils feel a sense of achievement.

Summative assessment is undertaken at intervals throughout the year, and teachers analyse this data to inform future planning. Formative assessment and responses to marking are embedded in all lessons.

     Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

At Bethany C of E Junior School, we have a strong focus on times tables and use the Number Sense Maths programme to structure this. It enables each child to achieve factual fluency in additive and multiplicative facts.
