Bethany C of E Junior School: Our Art Curriculum Intent

At Bethany C of E Junior School, our Art curriculum is designed to nurture every child’s understanding of their identity and their place within an increasingly diverse world. We want pupils to recognise that art is a powerful form of human expression—one that reflects culture, communicates ideas and emotions, and brings meaning and enrichment to everyday life.

Our curriculum develops pupils’ appreciation of the perspectives, traditions and creative achievements of others, encouraging them to respond with compassion as they explore how artists across time, cultures and communities have expressed their experiences. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils build the knowledge and skills needed to experiment confidently with a wide range of media, techniques and visual languages. They learn to take creative risks, show originality and embrace challenge with courage, understanding that mistakes are a valuable part of the artistic process.

We aim to inspire all children—regardless of background or need—to see themselves as artists. By engaging with ambitious, high-quality artworks and meaningful creative opportunities, pupils develop a sense of hope in their own potential and the belief that their ideas, voices and stories matter. Our curriculum promotes curiosity, imagination and critical thinking, enabling pupils to communicate visually with increasing fluency and independence.
