Bethany C of E Junior School: Our Geography Curriculum Intent

At Bethany C of E Junior School, we aim to cultivate a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of human and physical geography, enabling students to appreciate their local environment and its global context. We equip our pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes (National Curriculum, 2014) and we have developed a progressive Geography curriculum to reflect this.

Our sequence of learning builds upon prior knowledge so that pupils make links with previous knowledge in a relevant context to deepen their understanding. Pupils are encouraged to explain their reasons using key vocabulary in every lesson. Each year group has identified key learning which is embedded across a unit of work.

Pupils begin their Geography journey by learning about the United Kingdom and where they are within this context. They also focus on a local area as they begin to understand human and physical features in familiar contexts. As the sequence progresses through Key Stage 2, pupils learn about Europe and then the Americas.

Field trips are included to make learning engaging and hands-on. Pupils understand their place in the local community and become increasingly aware of how they can look after their environment. Teachers ensure all pupils are provided with engaging and challenging tasks; these are adapted for groups of pupils who require it to ensure they are successful and make progress within their learning.
